Make-A-Wish gives big party for girl, 15

CORONADO — Sequined party dress: check.

Cute date: check.

Rented limo: check.

With all the details in place, 15-year-old Brandy Myren is ready as ever for her red carpet moment tomorrow night.

The Clairemont High School sophomore, who was born with a congenital heart defect, is getting the bash of her dreams — make that any teenager’s dreams — thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Valentine’s Day soiree for 75 of her friends and family at the Hotel del Coronado will be an early Sweet 16 celebration similar to the birthdays coveted on MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16” reality series.

“I mainly wanted to have a party because I wanted to be able to include my friends on it,” said Brandy, who doesn’t actually turn 16 until October. “I wanted to give back to them as well as get a treat for myself.”

That includes a ruffled and sequined frock from designer Betsey Johnson and the celebrity treatment at a salon for her and three friends before the big night.

The resort’s circular Carousel room will be transformed into a hip lounge, with sleek white leather sofas, red light-up acrylic tables and pink rose centerpieces.

As the guests arrive, white-gloved waiters will serve signature “Brandytinis” of sparkling apple cider, grenadine and a cherry.

After a Mediterranean-Tuscan dinner, guests can indulge in a chocolate fountain and candy station and dance to a disc jockey’s tunes.

“We wanted to give her this very chic, European feel. Give it a high quality,” said Alexandra Ricaurte of La Jolla’s Bridal Bar, a one-stop shop for party planning that donated services for the event.

Stacy Menikoff, a Make-A-Wish volunteer who made everything possible, said the experience has been fulfilling.

“It’s been a lot of work but it’s been awesome to grow close to Brandy,” said Menikoff, 31. “It feels so good to put a smile on her face.”

Brandy has grown up with a heart valve defect that prevented her from playing sports or trying out for cheerleading like other girls. She tired easily and was on many medications.

The defect was finally corrected by a valve replacement when she was 14, but the surgery caused other complications, said her mother.

Brandy got a pacemaker in December but requires yet another surgery to replace it. If all goes well, she hopes to try out for the swim team soon.

“It’s hard not being able to just go out and do what I want, like my friends can,” Brandy said. “But I’m not going to say its completely horrible because I got an outlook on things in a completely different perspective.”

This private residence wedding was a vivacious all night love affair! Inspired by the colors of India and Poland this wedding was truly a site to see. The guests were treated to an intimate hill top setting surrounded by delicious cuisine, lively music and hookah bar. The night of fun lasted well into the wee hours of the morning fueled by a delicious 12am snack.

A lovely bridal bar bride is about to tie the knot! Her wedding date is Saturday, the twenty- seventh of February two thousand ten... follow our blushing bride as she prepares for her special day in less than two months.

Time is of the Essence:
With the venue set, the guest’s list near completion and the photographer booked, it’s onto invitations. Jennifer with Simply Posh to the rescue… the bride was able to meet with Jennifer at the Bridal Bar and in no time at all, they began to compile the pieces of an absolutely stunning wedding invitation! Creativity is now in full swing so Jennifer dashed to the studio to begin designing. With the wedding quickly approaching the bridal gown was next on the list.

The Dress:
Chez Bride Moderne opened their doors to us on a lovely Sunday and provided undivided attention to this special bride. After trying several dresses, future Mrs. Feerrar walked out glowing and we knew that was the dress!

Oh what a production… the Bridal Bar VIB Lounge took up a large portion of the Hyatt ballroom and took it up a notch with a stage! The time and effort that went into the production is definitely not over looked… The amazing 1200’ staging was furnished by Classic Party Rentals, San Diego Stage and Lighting and Plush Lounge. Spencer Bezy along with Voice and video provided a giant screen and projector, which entertained our brides with endless music videos and an up- close view of the ballroom fashion show! We have to thank Wedding Elegance, Indulge, Crown Weddings, Adelaide’s, Catherine Bachelier Smith, Botanica and Wildflower Linen for the gorgeous lounge décor.

One of the greatest challenges in planning a wedding is the need to organize and easily access information. One minute you are looking for that phone number or website address of the great photographer you heard about. The next minute you are trying to remember exactly what that dress looked like that you tried on last week. You’ve got gifts to keep track of, budgets to manage, guest lists to prepare, wedding gowns to shop for and on and on and on.

Even for the most organized bride, managing all of the details can prove to be a daunting task. For some time various websites have offered online planning tools and wedding software has also been available. Now for you iPhone or iPod Touch users, there are a number of applications that savvy programmers have created that will make the planning process much easier than you ever dreamed. They range from simple counters that are mostly fun and give you a wedding day countdown to complex planning tools that organize every aspect of your planning process.

One of our favorites is the Bridal Gown: Wedding Dress Shopping Assistant. You don’t realize how hard it is to keep track of what you like and don’t like in a dress until you have tried on 30 gowns at 5 salons and can’t remember the details of any of them. With this handy app you have all of the details at your fingertips and can even attach a photo of you in the dress from your photo library.

If you don’t know where to start your planning or just want to make sure you have a comprehensive list of action items, My Wedding is a planning tool that includes 166 pre-

populated ‘To Do’ items from the experts to get you started. With this application you can add your own items, organize, edit and track items, or even ‘spin the wedding decider’ to help make decisions when you just can’t make up your mind. The biggest strength of this tool is that it reminds you to include many items in your list that you might otherwise overlook. The major downside of this app is that it only lets you check off the items you have completed and doesn’t allow you to track any of the additional details.

Weddings generally include lots of parties and showers and fantastic gifts from thoughtful friends and family. They also include lots of thank you notes! The Thank You Gift List is a great app that allows you to create a list of events and track the gifts that were received at each event. It also integrates with your address book and allows you to add a picture of the gift to the list for reference. This app makes it super easy to keep track of all of your gifts in detail and tracks your thank you notes as well. The great thing about this app is that it also can be used for later events such as Christmas, birthdays, and more.

If you are dreading that first dance and don’t want to splurge on actual dance lessons, Waltz is simple little app that gives you video dance lessons. A little practice and you will look like a pro when you hit the dance floor on your special day.

And finally our absolute favorite app is called IWedding. This app costs a little more than the average app but utilizes many of the powerful features already built into your iPhone or iPod Touch to help with the organization of your wedding. It truly is

comprehensive and has some of the coolest features to simplify all of your planning. IWedding tracks your ‘To Do’ list, your budget, your guest list, your honeymoon, your first dance song selection, your vendors, your deposits, and so much more. It incorporates all of the checklists you need with a central location for recording all of the actual details for every item on the checklist. It also allows you to review your ‘To Do’ list by category, such as bride, wedding party, reception, etc. which allows you to focus on one topic at a time.

The guest list manager includes full integration with your contacts and address book, keeps track of RSVP’s, and will track meal preferences as well. The budget manager keeps track of all of your budget items and includes full details on times, dates, deposits, and costs for many of your line items including venues, officiant, photography, transport, flowers, and more. This is truly a must have app for busy brides.

For those of you who don’t live in the world of APPLE, another easily accessible tool is www.weddingwire.com. It includes a website creator, budget manager, guest list manager, vendor manager, timeline, checklists, seating plan creator and more! And best of all – it’s all FREE! This robust tool is extremely intuitive and provides lots of photos for inspiration and offers matching services to help you find the right vendors.

Whether you elect to use some of the latest technology or rely on basic spreadsheets or simple paper system, the most important thing is to relax and enjoy the ride!

Once again, the Bridal Bar is pleased to host Guest Blogger, Kristi Brooks from Stylelab. As Kristi continues to plan her big day, like most of you she is facing the creation of "The Guest List." Let's listen in as Kristi shares her challenges and some solutions!

The Magic Number....

Why does it seem that 150 guests is the magic number for most weddings? And more importantly, why does my fiance have such a giant family?! I grew up with two sisters, one uncle, one aunt and one first cousin, so my entire family can fit very comfortably around 2 or 3 tables. My fiance on the other hand.... different story. Since our venue can only accommodate 160 guests, this has been my single greatest stress so far.... cutting down the bloody guest list! Is it wrong that when any couple friend of ours breaks up, I say a little silent cheer? ( if you are one of my broken up couple friends reading this, I am terribly sorry for your loss and know you will find an even better mate, but not until after November 14th please:-)

To remedy this conundrum, I have devised a little test....
1) Does this person know I am engaged? If not, they're out.
2) Have I seen or at least talked to this person in the last year? If not, sorry, you also may not attend.
3) Were we invited to their wedding? This one is tricky and case sensitive; I am still working on a few of those cases.

I think all in all, it really comes down to who do YOU really want to be there on YOUR big day?

We recently asked our members to give us some great ideas to maximize the wow at your wedding while keeping your budget under control. Merilee's advice?

"Even though you are on a budget, don’t forget about the lighting! It will create the wow without breaking the bank!"

Merilee goes on to suggest that the secret is to compromise in other areas where guests won’t notice in order to add lighting to your event.

Another great idea is to put some real creative thought into the wedding…especially when thinking about how you can add details…they don’t often cost a lot, just take time and imagination to add your personal spin. Here's a great wedding that included some great personal touches including "cinnamon roll"

THE dress.....

For my celebrity clients, incredible gowns are a dime a dozen. You wear one down a red carpet, get photographed, toss it off, and give it away as you would rather be caught dead in Hollywood than be seen in the same dress twice, then pick another one and repeat. For us "normal" gals, this is a once in a lifetime experience. I have styled enough brides to know it's the dress most of us had be dreaming about since we saw our first Disney movie. While ( thankfully) my taste has evolved since Belle strutted her stuff in that giant yellow ball gown, I still wanted that "Princess for a day feel". I knew what style I wanted, strapless Mermaid style with rouching, now I just had to find the frock.

I hit up all the usual suspects in San Diego, and fell in love with a dress ( and the fabulous Michelle and Angie) at M Bride, only to find out it was the same one a friend of mine had worn. Now usually, that stuff doesn't bother me, but since it is a wedding and all, I kept searching for a more unique option. I went to Mon Amie in Costa Mesa and feel in love with all things Ines de Santo. I was told she trained with Christian Dior (whom I adore for his fierce admiration of the a woman's hourglass figure) and can rouche fabric like no one's business. The third dress I tried on was heaven. It was everything I wanted and so dramatically glamorous! It was straight off a 1950's Barbie, and I was a goner. Budget be damned, I had to buy THIS dress... and I did!

The Bridal Bar is pleased to feature Guest Blogger, Kristi Brooks of Stylelab for the first installment in her personal journey to the altar.

I have spent the majority of my career making other people look like a million bucks, and now suddenly, the spotlight has fallen on me! Being a celebrity wardrobe stylist, my first concern is always my client...Does her dress fit? Is she comfortable? Are all her bits and pieces where they should be? Will she be featured in the front, not back pages, of USWeekly?. If I can even get a brush through my own hair when I am working, I consider that a giant victory!
But, as of October 3 2008, the day my fabulous fiance popped the question, I have had to shift the focus a bit and actually think about me for a change. And let me just say, I have a whole new level of respect for anyone who is planning, or has planned a wedding!
As everyone one of my hitched girlfriends advised me, before I could even get down my first glass of champagne as a betrothed woman, a date and place is the first order of business. I looked at several venues in Orange County and San Diego, then finally settled on a beautifully historic Inn in Tucson, Arizona, where I grew up.
Okay, checked one thing off my to do list, and now the real fun begins..... The Dress!!!!

Interactive food stations are a hot new trend that will not only delight your guests but offers a tasting menu as well. Stations also gives your guests something to DO at your wedding and encourages mingling as well.

Whether your wedding is a small intimate celebration or a huge bash with lots of guests, tasting stations offer a little something extra for your reception that will make it memorable. Try these great ideas:

New year, new resolution - organize! And if you're newly engaged then there is no better time than the present to prepare yourself accordingly. Plan and prep in style and efficiently of course with this fabulous russell+hazel binder by Anne Chertoff (bridal expert from iVillage, Martha, Brides.com, and her own I Will to I Do).

The easy-to-use system takes a whole new approach to organization. We had such a great time at the Wedding Salon in Beverly Hills a couple of weeks ago and saw some great new ideas to share with you.

A few days ago we went to the Wedding Salon event at the Beverly Hills Hotel and scoped out some new emerging floral trends. Take a look at what hot So Cal pros created. It seems as though the next big thing is big, over-the-top, jewel-toned centerpieces. Tall and full on top, the hanging accents really enhance the pieces.

Kath & Kim is an Aussie comedy that's coming to the US starring Molly Shannon and Selma Blair. The show will air after The Office on Thursday nights starting October 9th so be sure to tune in! They were asked to consult on the show as a main topic throughout the first season is a wedding. We can't say much more than that just yet, but check out what you will see from The Bridal Bar in the second episode...and stay tuned to the show and our blog for all the fun bridal surprises!

Indulge Flowers shared some great images from a recent garden wedding that are sure to capture your imagination.

We are loving the mango taffeta linens from our friends at Wildflower Linens! This wedding had a decidedly Mediterranean feel and featured sunset colors of oranges and pink. We also love how they used a mix of square and rectangular tables and some creative lighting from San Diego Stage & Lighting to add some visual interest without a tremendous budget impact.

Garrett of Garrett Photography was kind enough to share some great photos from a recent wedding at IVY Hotel. Chassie and Steve have a great sense of adventure and style and it really comes through in the photos.

Garrett not only captured the vibe and attitude of this couple he maximized the atmosphere of the venue as well. IVY Hotel is a great spot for a couple who appreciates an urban vibe in the lap of luxury. Whether you have 50 or 250, they have a spot for you. (and their banquet tables are ovals, a little something different we like!)

Chassie and Steve definitely proved that every wedding should be a reflection of the personality of the couple. It's all about breaking the rules if necessary and making up your own! By the way, they walked down the aisle to Radiohead! Mendelssohn who?!? Just Fabulous Pastries provided these decadent cake pops for our Grand Opening and we are officially in love!!! They were red velvet with cream cheese frosting and wrapped in chocolate. Yum, yum, yum. Every attendee was scrambling to taste them and still raving about them the following week.

"As we all know, cupcakes are showing no sign of letting up in popularity. And for very good reason. Portable, just enough dessert, as fancy as you want or as simple. We want to say a special thanks to so many of our vendors who joined with us to "Rock" Bird Rock and celebrate the Grand Opening of the Bridal Bar.

We were fortunate to have the opportunity to offer San Diego a glimpse of the incredible beauty of Raj Tents as one of our newest Bridal Bar members. Thanks to Dominic and Maurice for sharing their amazing style with us.

The party also featured tasty treats from many of our Bridal Bar Catering, Bakery & Dessertier members including ChileCo Catering, Dazzle M Desserts, The French Gourmet, Giuseppe Restaurants and Fine Catering, Just Fabulous Pastries, Mosaic Catering, Candy Couture and Peartrees Catering.

And yes we got our dance on! Jerry Beck from Beck's Entertainment got the party started early with some great tunes and set the vibe for our celebration.

Our Brides & Bling was provided by the fabulous combination of Chez Bride Moderne and M Bride with some custom jewelry creations by the very talented Pamela Pogue - Juelerie.

Special thanks also to San Diego Stage & Lighting for the beautiful lighting, Plush Impressions for some great lounge furniture and the chance to show off their brand new LED bar and Lounge Appeal for really going all out to showcase some fantastic lounges for our guests. And that's not all - we even had a photo booth from our friend Peyton at Classy Photo Booths. If you had your picture taken - you can see it online at their website.

Each month The Bridal Bar showcases the latest in wedding design for our brides to see first hand. This month, we feature a beautiful table top in orange and white with the whimsy of parasols for an overhead accent. Each tabletop not only provides design ideas but also gives you a chance to literally "try on" different wedding styles as you create your perfect day.

This month we feature the work of Victoria Schroeder of Coronado Weddings and Kathy Wright of Kathy Wright and Co. Victoria is a second generation Wedding Consultant with more than 14 years of event design experience ranging from luxury weddings to galas and intimate celebrations.

The floral design, provided by consummate artist, Kathy Wright of Kathy Wright & Co., features orchids, raffia and succulents for a light and airy feel, perfect for a summer wedding or anytime in sunny San Diego.

Kathy specializes in event design and is a master at incorporating all elements of decor including lighting, linens, chairs, and of course beautiful flowers to create the perfect mood and environment for your wedding. Wedding Party Bridal Show was a huge success!

We had a great time at the recent Wedding Party Bridal Show. Pamela threw another great "party" and we had a chance to meet some fabulous new brides.

We'd also like to give a special "Thank You" to several of our vendors who were kind enough to assist us with our display.

Kathy Wright of Kathy Wright & Co. shared with us her considerable talent to design the overall look of the space and provided some wonderful floral as well. Word has it that Kathy recently did the first wedding at the new Hard Rock Hotel and it was fabulous!!!

Thanks to Adelaide's, Botanica, Catherine Bachilier Smith from CBS Weddings, Victoria Schroeder of Coronado Weddings, and Susanne Duffy from Crown Weddings for their beautiful tabletop displays showcasing just a snapshot of the incredible talents of The Bridal Bar members.

Plush Impressions also gave us a chance to showcase their brand new bar that has great lighting options to match any reception decor.

Last night we were privileged to join industry professionals at Neiman Marcus to preview their Bridal Collection in their newly expanded department on the third floor. The gowns were exquisite and include Vera Wang, Anne Barge and Monique Lhuillier. If you haven't seen it yet you should definitely make it a stop on your wedding dress tour.

We also got the first look at Exquisite Weddings Magazine's new issue hot off the press. It looks fantastic, so kudos, to Maureen Sullivan, Heather Back and especially Alyssa Holstrom, the Creative Director. We also want to congratulate Alyssa on her engagement and we are happy to be working with her as she plans her big day. Even industry insiders love the Bridal Bar!
